Geronimo was a tribal leader and took over when Cochise, chief of the Apaches, died. Geronimo rebelled against the government refusing to live on reservation. He was imprisoned at Fort Sill, Oklahoma and was taken out on occasion to be paraded around for photographers and the curious. He often refused food, but it was the cold, dank stone cell he was confined in that eventually meant his death. He is buried on the grounds of Fort Sill’s Military Graveyard.

I agree with AceEnemy, we could use more education on the Native Americans. I think April should be declared Native American Month.

jozzie, Yes I agree. The Europeans coming here stealing the land, killing hundreds of thousands, giving Small Pox and forcing them to live in unwanted dessert areas is not taught enough. They had no right to any of it. It is barely taught. You bet they teach about Columbus every year though. Today Native Americans have missing children , live in poor conditions with low incomes and addictions. I am 1/4 Iroquois and proud of it. I hope one day they will get justice.

the Sioux Nation has a billion dollars in the US Treasury for settlement of the "sale of their land" and even though it would amount to $170,000 per person they refuse to take it on the grounds that their land was never for sale. These are true American heroes and people who stand for what they believe in and not just sell out because we try to buy them off. They never sold their land we never had a right to TAKE their land and we should be ashamed as a nation.

susyQ77458, this is a common stereotype. Many Native tribes live in extreme poverty. When the money is doled out to members of the tribe it really isnt much. And how is money supposed to make up for the death and decimation of lives? It's views like this which are a reminder that education about Native people is Extremely needed.

jozzie, Isn't it funny (or sad) that there is a day/month for everything but that? Native Americans had-have such a rich culture and history! We could do so much with a Native day. The whole world should have such a day. To appreciate our roots and honor those who carry the torch for their tribes. ❤

F8os6s13, They say the concrete floor of his cell was worn where he paced his cell back and forth. That was horrible to treat anyone like that. He was treated worse than an animal. He should have had a burial in the way of his people, not in white man ways He should be exhumed and be placed with the Apache people where he should have been. Shame on the way the native people were mistreated and still are. The reservations are horrible.

when I went to school so long ago they never mentioned the Indians as they were not white. In fact in my 1968 Encyclopedia Brittanica, the forced removal of Indians from the east to the west of the Mississippi never mentioned the Indians perspective, in this case, the Veil of Tears.

Valerinna777, it wasn’t stealing, it was war. Europeans won. This is happened in many wars throughout history. there is a quote that says “to the victor goes to spoils. That’s what happened.” Indian tribes did the same thing to each other before we arrived. One Indian tribe would attack another and take some of the people for slaves. They would also occupy the land that the weaker tribe had lived on.
