Who is credited with the assassination of American outlaw Jesse James?

LaContessa, I remember a serial on radio in the 40s and a song sung at the end... A dirty little coward shot Mr Howard and laid poor Jesse in his grave. I believe Jesse was using the alias Howard.

I only know this because of the Brad Pitt film which has the answer in the title. :-)
