Jo, I've taught elementary school for almost forty years. When I taught First graders, basic Roman numerals were introduced to the students. I've taught Second graders for the last twenty years. Roman numerals, including rules governing how to decipher and write them, are being taught. The students learn the numerals up to one thousand. Also, First graders are taught cursive penmanship. In Second grade, by the end of the first quarter, everything written by by me and everything written by the students, is written in cursive. The students enjoy learning cursive and are pleased with the work being produced. Yes, the school is a private, parochial school.

Player #16118557, Public schools don't teach much of anything anymore. High school graduates go onto college/university practically illiterate because they're "passed" due to the education act that took the place of "no child left behind." BOTH are horrible!!

Math would have been nearly impossible with Roman numerals. How could you even add?

Smokey Rules, adding would pretty simple - just carry the I instead of the 1 lol. I’d be interested in how they did long division.

Gary, the point to CVIIXX (as one of the incorrect answers) is to make someone think that it also equals 113 - by thinking that XX minus VII is an acceptable format for 113. A clever 'wrong answer' considering CM = 900 or XC = 90, etc.

Roman was one of the things school never taught me. I managed to learn it all myself. Saying 2019 in Roman would be MMXIX.
