I loved Saint Petersburg. Yes it's gorgeous and the food is amazing. But it's the people I adore. My 11 year old daughter and I got off the train and found ourselves in an area where no one spoke English. It could have been very scary. But the Russians were so nice. They bought us a map and found us a cab and made sure we were well cared for. And I say "they" because by the time we got into the cab we had about a dozen people helping us. And they refused the money I offered for their help.

It was also the site of what was one of the longest sieges in history by Nazi Soldiers in WWII. Though it was at a horrific cost. Additionally, famine killed many, but in the end, the city did not fall to the Germans.

In 1914, Russia went to war against Germany, and Saint Petersburg was considered a German name, so the city’s name was changed to Petrograd, Russian for Peter’s City. By 1924, the Bolsheviks (Communists) had taken control of Russia, and Peter was a tsar’s name. So the city’s name was changed to Leningrad, Lenin’s City, after V. I. Lenin, leader of the Bolsheviks. When the Communist government fell in 1991, the city’s name was changed back to its original.

My wife is from St Petersburg. It's a wonderful city. The Marinsky Theatre is a must! As is a trip to Zenit's incredible football stadium. Culturally rich. A great night life. And the people are great.
