I thought a sieve had a fine wire mesh for sifting and colander was much larger and had bigger holes for draining and washing??

they are not exactly the same. a colander is for straining water and vegetables etc and a sieve is for sifting lumps from flour and other fine ingredients

My colanders are used as colanders, and if all you use them for is a decorative container you're missing the point. I do have a decorative one. It's also used as a colander.
