Player #8297262, American football should have a different name. It is played with hands more than foot and definitely not a ball!!!!!

Player #8297262
IrishBarry, as the question said football (soccer), it only applies to association football, otherwise known as soccer. which was invented by the English.

He means, I guess, that it is not a "ball" because it is not round.
The world "ball" originally and normally assumes roundness but has become extended to other shapes as for Rugby Union, Rugby Sevens, Aussie Rules ("footie"), American Football, Canadian Football, etc.

No connection between Central American sport and cricket appears in classical cricket literature.
Rugby Football was invented by the English at an English school called Rugby. It started as an extension of football, also called "soccer".

RedSeaDiver,
It is, by far, the most complex ball game in the world.
Variations in ball, atmospheric and pitch conditions compounded by complex and highly technical player skills (bowling, batting, fielding, captaincy, etc) make for fascinating experiences.
It is also the most versatile game with many variations such as test cricket, twenty-twenty, fifty over, hundred ball games, etc, etc.
If you have played it at any significant level, its complexities become engrossing.

Did netball come first?

I just don't understand cricket! How can you play for days and still end up as a draw?

Uninitialized, although their are records of something similar played in ancient Central America not exactly the same but maybe was a source of inspiration who knows. Also wasn’t rugby invented or played first by the Scots don’t know if anyone mentioned this already.

Player #9442102
Player #14292082, why did you say no ball? Why is there a football?

Player #14292082, Although your argument is well taken, I'm afraid we've passed the point of no return as far as terminology is concerned. "Football" as it's played & known in the U.S. is here to stay.

I read the question wrong so chose the British sports. My fault

Dr. Naismith was a Canadian living in the USA when he invented basketball. Canada was an independent country at that time. It is a constitutional monarchy, but not part of the United Kingdom.
