1. You don't HIT the keys! You press them, and that is not percussion.
2. The piano is ONLY referred to as a stringed instrument.
3. When you press the keys, small hammers inside the piano tap the strings and produce the sound. That still does not make the piano a percussion instrument.

Stobor, I believe the point here is that while it is in the STRING category, it is the percussive action that makes the strings sound. I recall thinking something similar hearing Zoltán Kocsis play Rachmaninoff’s 3rd concerto.

By the same logic striking a guitar string with a pick would make it 'percussion'. A piano technically makes a sound via mallet striking a string but practically it is not a percussive instrument. Good question though I think, if you know how a piano works you should get the answer.
