Peking the old pronunciation is now been replaced by Beijing. It,s a matter of semantics & different systems of pronunciation. The word bei means north, so it was the northern kingdom, as differentiated from Nanking which is the south kingdom, nan meaning south.

Player 2019313. That's because the Romanization system was changed from Wade-Giles to Pinyin after the Revolution(early 50's I believe. ) The West didn't start using the Pinyin system until the late 1970's.
