Peking the old pronunciation is now been replaced by Beijing. It,s a matter of semantics & different systems of pronunciation. The word bei means north, so it was the northern kingdom, as differentiated from Nanking which is the south kingdom, nan meaning south.

Widama007, They didn't. Pekingese is Cantonese for Northern capital and in Mandarin , now the official language throughout China, Beijing is northern capital. So same city.
