For respiration in deep sea, what is a preferred gas in a mixture with oxygen and nitrogen?
Correct answer: Helium

I liked the question, my answer was wrong but still I've learned something new :)

as a non renewable resource we should stop wasting it in balloons

Diver Dan, it gets the name bends from miners, who would also absorb nitrogen but remaining bent over for many hours, the bubbles that got trapped in their joints kept them in a similar position.

The helium also tightens the vocal chords, so when a diver speaks, they will do so with a highly pitched voice.

I was a diver in the early days of diving, using an Aqualung to breathe, with the O2/nitrogen mix. They used to call the effect of deep diving "narcosis of the deep." Divers would get so high they'd try to share their "air" /mouthpiece with the fish! (Or so the stories went.) That's one reason we always dived with someone else. : ]
Nutshell
Unfortunately, we are running out of helium because it can escape our atmosphere and is captured from natural gas extraction.

I just dive for fun! Sometimes with nitro, it’s a good thing I live on an island with the beach 4 minutes away!

RedSeaDiver69, it's fun to inhale helium and speak even when you haven't been diving. The high pitched voice is hilarious! My Science buds & I did it as a drinking game when we went out sometimes.

marky69er, Competitive swimmers use it, along with blood-doping, to gain an edge over their competition. The higher you ride in the water, the less drag.....

SCUBA diving takes you to another world! I highly recommend it.
Artie
I knew this because of all the Jacques Cousteau Deep Sea Diving TV specials where they used He tanks to mix with air they breathed to prevent the bends.
Artie
Remember watching Jacque Cousteau extreme diving using Helium to help deal with the extreme pressure and the resulting high pitched Mickey Mouse voices

odd formulation

Sonia, I got it wrong too
irene
without the oxygen and nitrogen, divers will sound like a tweetie bird
Tony
CyndiWig1, Sounds waves travel faster in helium than in normal air. This causes the higher pitch when speaking.
lloyd
it will never run out, don't worry

I’m a SCUBA diver, so got this one!

I used my in game money to get it right

I limit my diving depth so I don’t have to decompress.

RedSeaDiver69, Actually, the high pitch comes from the fact that the speed of sound in air is 960m/s, almost 3X faster than in air 343m/s. That is why your voice gets higher.

that's how I got the correct answer
