My grandmother came from Germany as a little girl before WWI. Her father bought a farm and grew turnips. When WWI started, my grandmother was bullied and the children called her father a spy. She didn't know what it was, so she asked her father. He laughed and told her that when he was weeding turnips they would whisper secrets to him. I never met my grandmother, much less my great grandparents. I think I have their same droll sense of humor, though.

amazing that no one mentioned the famous speech in Berlin by JFK when Kennedy told the germans " ich bin ein berliner" . crowd and media loved it. Berlin was at the heart of the cold war back to the days of the airlift of 1948 when it was blockaded by Soviets troops encircling the city deep inside East aGermany. Truman was determined to defeat vfc the siege over many months so American English and French planes flew in food and supplies every day. eventually Stalin withdrew his blockade.
