Shelby Johnson, They do get sick Shelby and it's usually a very short time from that to death and unsurprisingly the main causes are organ failure, cancer and pneumonia. It always made me wonder why people who are alcoholics rarely get sick while they continue to drink, but as soon as they get clean and stay clean they get sick all the time.. and for long periods of time. My father was never sick while he was drinking. Not even a cold. When he got clean and stayed clean for a couple years, he got cancer, and got pneumonia repeatedly. On his deathbed he said "I should never have quit drinking! I probably would have lived longer!" So sad but true!
