There are more than two versions of the arthurian tale. All just a little bit different, and all very interesting. Love reading them. And love watching movies and tv shows about Arthur, Lancelot, Merlin, etc.

The answer is Arthur. He wasn’t king when he withdrew Excalibur from the stone.

why are we seeing a roman gladiator's helmet? Arthur as supposed to exist inthe early dark ages after the Romans left Britannia.

I noticed a couple of people thought Lancelot wielded Excalibur, but the version I recall had Lancelot carry Excalibur after Arthur was killed in order to return it to the Lady of the Lake, though he never wielded it in battle.

As has been pointed out , the sword pulled front the stone IS NOT Excalibur . The sword in the stone was only to be pulled out by the future king .Arthur , as a squire was sent to fetch a sword by his knight and saw the sword in the stone and pulled it out for his knight to use in the tournament . Excalibur was given to the Arthur by the Lady of the Lake . This is why it was returned to her on his death

I have been fascinated with the Arthurian legend all my life. Found out about it when an uncle gave me The Crystal Cave by Mary Stewart. First book of four. Starts when Merlin is a child. Absolutely amazing books. When I was 25 my parents took me on a huge trip to Great Britain and I was in awe when I had the opportunity to climb all over the site of Tintagel in Cornwall. 28 years ago and I can still remember every detail of that magical trip. I’m blessed with wonderful parents 🥹
