In Indian culture there are many various regions, with each region being identified by a common
last name. Example such as the Patels from the region of Gujarat. They're not all related. It just identifies their tribe.

millwallmarty, it is a democracy. A democracy is a form of governing by the people as a whole, meaning all of the people have a vote in laws etc. Unfortunately, this type of government does not give "rights" to anyone. The majority is in total control, and the minority has none. They do practice the caste system, which definitely keeps the wealthy and powerful strong, and unfortunately the minority will never get laws changed in their favor. The United States is a republic, a union of states. The US is governed by "representative democracy", not true democracy.
