What comet was first recorded in 240 BC and returns every 74–79 years?

i watched a movie years ago of Mark Twain, Samuel Clemmens and it shiwed he eas born on the night Haleys Comet appeared and again on the night he died. I wonder if this is true.

I was born under Halley's comets appearance in 1986 and have a red circle shaped birthmark that seems to look like a comet with streaks following it lol

Edmund Halley did not directly observe the comet bearing his name. He used the formulas of his friend Isaac Newton to calculate that those various observations over the years were in fact the same object. He died before it showed up again but it was where he predicted so it was named in his honour.

I’ll get to see it again only if I live to be 110 years old. Wish me luck.

I went out alight in 1986 looking for the passing of Halley in my lifetime I had a powerful telescope and good binoculars in a dark field on my own they didn’t say it was going to be extremely cloudy so didn’t see a thing note it’s hard work trying to be an astronomer in the uk to cloudy mostly

I was 13 when Haley's comet came through I saw it with my family it had a long tail then I came outside later it had a short tail. Ive always wanted to know what year it was when it passed .

USAMcK, Edmund Hailey was born the year of its appearance, determined it's period, and died in the year of its next return. That's why it's named after him.

I remember seeing Halley when I was 6 years old. My mom showed it to me in the night sky. I'll have to reach the age of 80+ to see it a 2nd time. Not many people get to have such a privilege but I do hope that those of you that were born in the early 80's get to see Halley for that 2nd time.
