In Greek mythology, what is Pegasus?
Correct answer: A winged horse

Montana Lady
They cleaned that myth up a bit didn't they? Medusa was a very virtuous and beautiful human woman who devoted her life to serving the goddess Athena. She was raped by the sea god Poseidon in Athena's temple which angered the goddess so much she turned her into a Gorgon, and Medusa lived the rest of her life in miserable solitude because no human could ever look upon her without turning to stone. So she was deemed a monster and beheaded by Perseus, which was when she gave birth to Pegasus, the offspring of her and Poseidon.
It's one of the first "women's fault simply for existing" stories in written history... because Medusa did nothing wrong but was raped by a male (Poseidon), judged by a woman (Athena), cast out by society, which was when she became feared as a monster to be slain...
(Her representation of beauty, fearlessness, and strength is why Gianni Versace chose her for the Versace logo.)

I love mythology especially Greek

Montana Lady, thank you for that retell. Most interesting. I thought it was because she was so vain that she told Athena in worship that she was even more beautiful than her. That this angered the Godess and hence she was made so ugly that looking upon her would turn you to stone. Now your story makes more sense. Why would a worshipper of Athena say such things? Many thanks. This is enlightening.

the 1981 version with hunky Harry Hamlin!

the word myth doesn't mean fake story or fairy tale,
derives from the word mythos which means story etc.
...if it was fake it would be called para (myth) which mean a story from a human imagination i.e. fairy tales.

TotallyNotSoup
Not as well known but the Pegasus actually aided the hero Bellophoron in killing the Chimera. Years and years passed and Bellophoron yearned to fly again and when he flew Pegasus again he fell from a great height and became blind. Don't be greedy was the lesson I think. hehe.

Montana Lady, I listened to Greeking Out podcast and learned so much. Greek mythology is interesting, entertaining and diabolical, all in one. What crazy to me is that there are so many incest stories! Zeus used to be my fav mythical character till I learned that he is womanizer. Im still tripping out about all these characters from Greek mythology.
