Malignancy, I just assumed it was because 5-0h means "police" on the CB radio, in police code, and in street slang. (It's what the lookouts always yelled to the street drug dealers & prostitutes when they saw a cop coming, and you'd hear it echo down the streets.)

FYI... For those wondering which came 1st, Hawaii Five-O or the slang term '5-0' for police/cops, it was the TV show. It's actually because of this show that '5-0' is now commonly used to mean 'police/cops'.

Re-watching the original recently, it was interesting how they used their brains and worked out solutions to figure out who did something or how to catch the crooks. Also cool to see "locals" regularly along with Hollywood big names early in their careers.
