These were a favorite of drug dealers in the 80s because they could get a page without detection and then go out to use a pay phone (remember those?) to call the "customer" back. I was never a drug dealer! Don't ask how I know this...

Mystic, I worked for Motorola C &E (Communications & Electronics) Paging Division for 19 years. I sold them from 1977 till 1996. The first pagers were tone only, so when it beeped, you would call a dedicated phone number to get your message. Then the tone & voice units came out which would give you a very short voice message. After that, the next big change came when digital display pagers were released. Without pagers, you wouldn't have cellphones now.
