John, They are made from the metal of cannon captured during the Crimean war . I think there is still a plentiful supply of the metal for this medal which probably weighs about four ounces. Incidentally I recall my long dead parents told me my godfather was Bill Speakman VC, earned during the Korean War . I don’t know how true this was but Google him

It is awarded by the PDSA for gallantry or devotion, by military animals in the face of the enemy. 32 pigeons, 18 dogs, 3 horses and 1 ship's cat. (there may be more dogs due to more recent conflict, I'm not sure)
