Not sure if this is true elsewhere, but, here in Oregon, "frying" yourself seems to have gone out of fashion. So glad...nothing's attractive about skin cancer.

Here in Australia we say "slip, slop slap" which means slip on a shirt, slop on sunscreen and slap on a hat. Melanoma capitol of the world.

Growing up in Las Vegas I never used sunscreen. Nobody did. Many of my generation are now dealing with melanoma. Now I slather the sunscreen on before I go out, especially when in Hawaii (like now - but at least 20 minutes before getting in the water).

I always tanned nicely when I was younger but I take meds now and all I do is burn now. I don't go out in the sun much anymore.

penawareof, While l have never tanned well, l had always wanted to. Tans make one look nice , but of course, they are not healthy in the way you have to expose yourself to get one.

RushMama2112, I am a pale fair skinned person.I do not tan I burn. My legs never tan. so I'm careful when I am outside. My mom had skin cancer removed from her forehead twice.

TwoTin16, I am mixed race of African descent. I need the sun daily, but in the UK, we don't get enough sun, so people like me have to take vitamin D to counter for this. when I get a chance to lie in the sun, I do. I have never burnt, but I have had sunstroke twice, which was not fun. I take care not to stay out for too long at a time.

black people are the natural people of the planet we have a sunblock built inside of our genetic makeup the sun is a part of our diet we need it daily sunscreen and sunblock is a business for the Caucasian race melanin is in dirt trees and everything on the planet be thankful and know that you are blessed if you have this inside your body

I underestimated the power of the sun's rays upon my melanin rich skin because I was told people with the color that I had didn't get sunburned. How wrong that was, because it's possible.

I didn't know that. How is that measured? I did know that dark skin has more melanin which protects it from burning in the sun. People with red hair have the least protected skin and are most susceptible to sunstroke.

I have come to notice that black people don't get "Sunburnt" we just get darker when we stay in the sun too long.
