The first successful heart transplant was administered by Hamilton Naki. Dr. Christaan Bernard had taken the credit because Hamilton Naki was a black man in apartheid era in South Africa

I have been an organ donor since I was old enough to do so and it isn’t hope that if something were to happen to me I would be able to help another person to have a second chance at living a longer life . People may think it’s odd to give away their body parts after death but for me it’s a form of transcendence to have a part of me love on after my mortal body would normally return to the earth.

ThemightyVictoria, Well Victoria the truth is that your learning about many things that an eight year old isn't expected tokm know. so keep playing the game and never be discouraged by an incorrect answer. you're still learning and that's what is important oh buy the way many of older people did not get the answer right. keep asking questions and learning

Newcomer4626, correction...Naki was a SELF-TAUGHT surgeon yet with such respective skill that he was chosen by Christaan N. Barnard to secretly ASSIST. He was hired as a gardener at University of Cape town, S. Africa. While there, he covertly observed surgeries from which he was able to teach himself th

I remember this as if it were yesterday as it was an incredible advance in medicine and surgery. Now so many people have their lives extended and/or improved thanks to the work of this man. Quite a feather in the cap for South Africa.

B*, Not totally unrelated. The heart must be strong enough to help pump fluid out of the lungs. If it isn't, the fluid stays in the lungs, bacteria has a wonderful environment to grow (warm, moisture, dark) and that's how pneumonia thrives. ĺ I'm not saying that was the case here, but a distinct possibility
