Its very sad that he had a sad and awful life. Didn't get recognition til after his death, so he died insane and depressed.

If he was born in the era of mental health understanding, Van Gogh could have maybe actually enjoyed the success from his genius artwork. Instead he suffers, makes the world of Art a better place, and someone else gains from his hard work?? Plus also the life story just jacks up the price after death. The human race can be very heartless sometimes. He probably cut his ear off because the poor man would have been hearing voices.

If he had been born into a time when mental illnesses were both understood and treated, he likely wouldn’t have made the beautiful art that he did. Much of it was influenced by what he “saw” in his turbid mind. Starry Night is a prime example.

I absolutely love Van Gogh!! and the fact that you cannot separate mental illness from his work is so foundational. I did a whole project on him & mental illness.
