Revolutionized manufacturing, ordering, stocking, shopping, and shipping. I was in retail when the bar codes came about. Really made everybody's jobs simpler. No more getting that ink all over everything. Loved it from the beginning.

Mild Load 2269, My uncle worked for Wrigleys for 32 years! I remember him talking about this “new system they were trying to make things faster and easier! He didn’t think it was going to work” LOL

I had a Panasonic vcr that had a scanner in the corner of the remote. For a short time, newspapers and TV guides printed a barcode next to each and every programme listed and you could scan it and then point it to your TV and by pressing a button, your vcr was p programmed to record.

Heartland Old Guy, The 1st barcode scanned in England was a packet of tea bags in Superkey at Pinchbeck, Lincolnshire in October 1979. Staff had to put tickets with the relevant bar code on to all products. This was before they were printed on everything. The store is now a Morrisons. I live there.

The question intimated that this pack of gum was the very first product to have a barcode, but the answer implies it was the first product bought using a barcode.
