I love American Pie & can sing all the lyrics.It is NOT American Pie unless it is sung by McLean (or me) in its entirety. To shorten the song is a great diservice.

A terrible cover by a good artist. But then, I don't think anyone could have done it anywhere near as well as Mr. McLean.

It is so annoying when a great song by a great artist is "covered" and they change it by leaving words/phrases out! Changing the tempo is bearable & sometimes make the original song better e.g. "I Will Always Love You" by Dolly Parton.

recently saw Don McLean interviewed and he said he loved Madonna's cover of the song. He made good money from it and gained some new fans.

American Pie was written somewhat about Buddy Holly but Don McLean attributes it as more of a spiritual anthem by the way he references God in the lyrics. He attributes other songs of his as having spiritual God influenced lyrics.
