Used to have gerbils and breed them. Accidentally grabbed one by its tail and the tail remained in my hand, only the bone stayed. So yeah don't ever attempt to hold them by the tail. BTW I took it to the vet and it was fine. I was 12 at the time.

when I was a kid many many years ago my mother vacuumed up our gerbil by mistake (that had gotten out), she quickly turned the vacuum cleaner off shook the hose and it came running out unharmed

Gerbils are great because they have furred tails, not naked ones like rats.
