What do you call the piece of a sundial that casts a shadow?

When I was a kid I learned that if you stand outside on a sunny day facing north and look down at your shadow that's cast on the ground and you can tell what time it is by the direction of the shadow just like a sundial.

Gnomon is not Latin but Greek and it means "one who examines".
