The brown, grizzly and Kodiak are all subspecies of Ursus arctos. They have all been in this species for several years. Even some taxonomists are including Polar Bear (Ursus maritimus - as a clade, since it has been discovered the two hybridize with fertile offspring (pizzly bear). So not quite right. I learned them as grizzly (U. horribilis), Kodiak and Alaskan brown bear (U. middendorffi) and polar bear (Thalarctos maritumus).
