Where did turkeys come from?
Correct answer: The Americas
Rachel
I have Turkeys that cross my yard, and I even had one bold male that was "pecking" at a window on my home. He was really trying to start a fight with his reflection.
DjDiamond435
In Turkey they are called "The American Bird"
Nutshell
Becca Sue, from what I understand, the turkey got its name because Turkish merchants were known for selling a similar looking bird at the markets in Britain. So when the first settlers came to the Americas they called them by the same nickname as the birds they knew from home.

Wild turkey. You can eat it, or drink it.
FiannaFianna
dollis1963, not sure where you got your info from. Wild turkeys do not avoid flying. In fact, they roost in trees and have to fly up to do so. And they are actually quite fast. I have come across then in the woods with my dogs and, believe me, they were not the least bit reluctant to fly.

A guy in the western U.S. told his friend how amazed he was at how turkeys could still get into his fenced-in garden. "They fly!" he said.

1 of my hub's favorite sayings is. "It is hard to soar like an eagle when you work w/turkeys"

I live in northern Michigan with dense woods around our house. We love watching the wild turkeys during the winter. They'll come up right against our house looking for food. They are comical to watch af they'll follow in a line. And they roost in tall pines at night to keep safe fro.m from

A friend of mine in Minnesota lived on a turkey farm, and we often had turkey eggs, because they had more than they needed. They are about twice the size of chicken eggs.

FiannaFianna, not only can they fly and roost in trees but boy can they run they beat P if any harm comes to their brood and now we lived up in the mountains where I thought came through all the time and they would run down to the beach and take off across the water and bruised up in the pine trees yeah they're amazing creatures and they can run really fast and take the flight almost immediately so very hard to catch not that I would want to
Morganlady
granny, actually those are the domestic turkeys. they don't have to be smart they just have to live until just before Thanksgiving.

Ben Franklin has stated that he felt that the turkey was a more appropriate national bird for the United States. the bald eagle in 1782 was not part of the United States it was only in Alaska. The bald eagle was chosen for its majestic looks and it's fierceness and it is only native to North America.

My home is in the woods in New England. There are huge flocks of wild turkeys here. They're very aggressive Raptors. They fly up into the highest pine trees to sleep. In the spring they walk all over the neighborhood in packs, displaying their plumage, showing off for the hens They're very dangerous in the spring.
