How they discovered it was in the Old Sailing days it was hard to keep fresh water on board ship. The water would turn stagnant in the wooden barrels make everyone sick so they found if they put a couple of stalks of sugar cane in with the water it would preserve it.... it would also ferment. (Pirates mostly- they couldn't just go in any port.) That's how Grog was invented, and if sat for a long time..... Rum😎
