Although the master and servants reference to Boxing day has some weight it's one of those historical points that isn't absolutely certain. In Europe it dates to the middle ages and is believed to be a reference to Alms boxes placed in areas of worship that were set out specifically to collect donations for the poor on this day.

Player #128057, Traditionally, boxing day was the next working day after Christmas, when the local tradesman would come round to collect their box. If Christmas fell on a Saturday, boxing day would be the following Monday. Nowadays, it has become just the following day.
