I heard on a interview on one of the band members that they were in Australia when it got cold. On of the person's they was staying with told them it was a three dog night. Meaning according to old custom they determined the cold by how many dogs you had to sleep in your bed to keep you warm. That's how 3 dog night got its name from a cold evening that it would take 3 dogs to keep them warm
