She was lucky. Hitchcock was known for being obsessed with his female leads. When Tippi Hedren rejected his romantic overtures, he retaliated by subjecting her her to days of being attacked by the starlings in "The Birds". Not a nice guy.

nimblemoon, "The Birds" is my second favorite movie of all time. I seen "The Girl"; an account of his relationship with Tippi. He was very aggressive and creepy with her.

Sorry, wasn't through. Hitchcock...when I learned about his disgusting behavior, was despicable. I lost all respect for the man immediately.

Hitchcock was horrible to Tippim Hendrin in The Birds. He at first told her he was going to use mechanical birds, and on the day of shooting used real ones. He made her endure weeks of reshoots of the attic scene. She had to be hospitalized.

Movie begins slowly...gets lot better. Coming out of the 50's when monsters were enlarged/crazed due to a dose of radiation, or a witch's curse. or some such nonsense, I found it extraordinary that a writer could make birds we see every day into such frightening beings. I don't think I've since seeing a group of birds without thinking about the movie. I was a child but remember it took extensive training just to get all the birds in the playground scene to sit together. Tippi Hedren was very believable. Hitchcock...which I learned as an adult

It’s too bad that in the modern day he’d be sharing a cell with Harvey Weinstein, because Hitch truly was a tremendous film maker

Vertigo was about the only vehicle that Novak played well, her other performances were considered by most to be artificial, arch and affected; it didn't help that she affected one of the most artificial looks of anyone in Hollywood, only Divine had weirder looking eyebrows for example !! Novak's career was short. Hitchcock was famous for getting great performances out of ANYONE. Probably not Raquel Welch though, (he wasn't God.)
