I was an air traffic controller in Houston and I remember watching his pilotless depressurized jet climb quietly through our airspace. Very creepy knowing all on board are dead and the plane will run out of gas and eventually crash. One of those days a controller never forgets. So helpless and hopelessly sad.

Another memory of Payne: he was a big fan of the NFL. He had shirts and color coordinated knickers for every team, which he wore when he played a tournament in an NFL city.

After an internet search, I've found that Stewart and 4 others died of hypoxia, lack of oxygen. There are several memorials, including one in his home state of Missouri. There is less information about where he is buried. Probably in Springfield. In addition, I believe he chose the colors of his clothing by the professional sports team in the area of the tournament.

it failed to mention the most interesting thing! that the plane became depressurized and they all passed out. I can't remember if it had to be shot out of the sky but it was very interesting.
