At the time of the crash I was teaching 7th grade English. My students were anxiously awaiting our trip to the library to watch the shuttle. I can't even imagine how it was for the kids when they saw it blow up. It was a day my students or I will never forget.

I was in Tampa and watching what you can see of the launches from here, which is the jet trail. I'd watched many of them, and I could tell immediately it was wrong.

ObstinatePilot36976, Yes, I did. i was home sick from school and my mom thought I'd like to see it. Even at 8 years old I knew that all 7 of them were gone and I went from excitement to tears just like that. For the next few launches I was too traumatized to watch. Bless their souls. 🌹💖

Ness, prior to becoming a Social Studies teacher in New Hampshire, Ms. McAuliffe was a teacher at Thomas Johnson Jr. High School in Lanham, MD, while I was a student. She was my home-room teacher at the beginning of each day. There is a memorial case dedicated to her at the entrance. Prior to the explosion, as they mentioned the names of those aboard, I thought it was a coincidence regarding the name....

That event makes me cry. Can you imagine the joy this teacher felt at being chosen when there were 11,000 applicants? And the memories she would have shared with her families and friends for years and years? So sad.
Tony

mel, me too. I was only 7, but I can distinctly remember the excitement before the launch, the launch itself, and the explosion. It’s kinda vague after that, I recall our teacher screaming, “No! God, no!” Then tripping over kids to shut off the tv, I recall us crying with her for a while then she said “Okay! Who wants to make something pretty?!” And all of us doing artsy stuff. I kinda remember parents getting kids and then that night talking about what happened with our parents and watching it over and over again on the news. It was so surreal. Of course, back then we didn’t have all the immediate media angles, (like videos or livestream stuff) like we do today. We had the original footage and later pics from those who were there, but it was so raw because there was so little violence on tv then. (Or at least nothing I was allowed to watch had such death and sadness surrounding it.)

MikaylaSunrise1967, I was one of those kids who watched it happen. It was so incredibly sad. I was only 7 and in first grade. I really don’t think all of us really understood what exactly was happening until we got home and heard from our parents and relived parts of it on that nights evening news. I do recall teacher stumbling over kids to get to the tv and shut it off. We just sat and cried with her for a while then our teacher bravely pulled up her boot straps and focused the class on artsy stuff. For some reason I think most parents came to get their kids early, but I can’t really recall that part. It was a sad day for everyone, one that will live on in all the hearts who saw that tragedy.
