When was two-tiered (first class) air travel established?

Wonder, Why first class...if one has the money you get a meal, maybe a "bed" on long flights. If not, a seat, with a great 1 1/2" space to recline ? and it should be called baggage class ! But one gets there at the same time the first class does.
