I've always understood that a village is a small settlement with a church and a Hamlet is one without a church.

At school in the sixties we were taught that a Hamlet was a cluster of houses without access to any mains services i.e. shop, postbox, telephone lines and church. I think the goal posts have moved now 🤔😊
