What is a small human settlement without a church called?

Not only a play by Shakespeare then

I live in france and almost every hamlet has a church

there's a Hamlet in Derbyshire called Whatstandwell and has a train station

there's a place in Liverpool called St Michael's in the hamlet, St Michael's being a church....

I've always understood that a village is a small settlement with a church and a Hamlet is one without a church.

At school in the sixties we were taught that a Hamlet was a cluster of houses without access to any mains services i.e. shop, postbox, telephone lines and church. I think the goal posts have moved now 🤔😊
