What name is given to the large, treeless plains south of the Amazon?

It is South of Amazon, but VERY South, at the opposite extreme of the country (Brazil). Not a good reference.

Guanaco, brocket, mara, viscacha, cavy, coypu, grison. These are actual animals? Never heard of them. I'd guess they were the Dark Side's version of the Seven Dwarfs.
