Which organ is affected by pleurisy?
Correct answer: Lungs
nimblemoon
When I was little, both my parents were smokers. I constantly had lung issues that have carried with me throughout my life. So glad smoking is on the decline!

The human body is so complex, so many things can go wrong with it. I am blessed with being an old fart and have yet to take ANY medicine. But! Something will break. Won't be long now. Argh!

I suffered a spontaneous pneumothorax (collapsed lung) 2 years ago at work, just by lifting 25ltr drum, the pain was excruciating and I was convinced it was a heart attack, rushed to a&e and they cut through my chest wall to fit a chest drain, 1wk in hospital and 1wk at home b4 back to work. seemingly common in slender guys. Thanks to the NHS and all staff xx

this is a very strange disease indeed. I had it about 20 years ago. I woke up one summer morning with sharp pain in my shoulder went to work anyway the pain subsided. The next day I woke up the pain was even worse but even though it didn't subside I went to work somehow. The third day, it's always the third day, I woke up and it was unbelievably painful I got in to see a doctor that morning. He asked me a very few questions including how do I get to his office. He told me to go directly to the emergency room where I would be admitted. It was a frightening few days. It was treated with painkillers. Eventually the pain went away and never returned.

I had it once, when I was in college. Years later, I thought I had it again and treated my symptoms the same way for a month, before going to the doctor - that time it was 4 broken ribs instead (I'd broken them without bruising) that's how bad pleurisy hurts!

nimblemoon, right??? My mom smoked while she was pregnant with me and 3-4 packs a day afterwards. No going outside for her. I had asthma and chronic bronchitis as a result.

I had pleurisy when I was 14yo, it was so painful. My GP prescribed black jack , which I had to rub on back & chest and it went in a few days . They should not of banned it, just because of its name, it was really good and I loved the smell of it.

Pleurisy as result of pericarditis and heart surgery shortened my sister's life. She passed on a age 36. It was not easy to her through all that

I had Pleurisy about 10 years ago, apparently had approximately 6 litres of fluid drained from my lungs and had to have surgery so they could get it all. Spent 3 weeks all up in hospital, the pain was excruciating, would not wish it on my worst enemy.

Having a daughter who is a chronic asthmatic I'd be worried if I didn't get this right. She was 7 the first time she got pleurisy and it irreparably damaged her lungs, add that to the fact that I was a heavy smoker until she was 6, the poor kid didn't stand a chance. I've lost count of the amount of times I've nursed her through pneumonia at this stage. I have to say though, she's very lucky with the boyfriend she has. He made a point of learning what to look for and what to do.
