The demon king Ravana(located in current Sri Lanka) kidnapped Lord Ram’s wife Sita. The hindu epic Ramayana describes the events in great details. Diwali is the day when Ram arrived back in his home town of Ayodhya after killing Ravana and his demon brothers, with Sita. Ram crossed the sea by building a bridge of rock, between india and Sri Lanka. See link above. (Ravana was highly educated and learned. He knew that Ram is Incarnation of Vishnu, Hindu God and a death at Ram’s hand confimrs Moksha or Nirvana.
