I have tried and failed to read this novel twice. As much as I enjoyed reading Lord Of The Rings, The Silmarillion is like reading a telephone directory with added family tree for every entry.

it's complicated reading but I love it! Tolkiens works are the basis for all fantasy books including Martin's song of fire and ice

sunsetdb7, Agreed. I'm not averse to difficult reading but this one stymied me.

Best book ever. Gets easier to read each time.

Mikael, incorrect. The Tolkien Estate did not give TV rights to the Silmarillion, only the appendices.

One of my favorite authors and has been for over 40 of my 53 years.

The whole fantasy genre was based on Tolkiens stories, the Silmarillion is complex but it would be great to see the Fall of Gondalin recreated on screen

sunsetdb7, I agree. I have tried to read it several times. It sits on my bookshelf next to the others waiting for me to retire when I hope I'll have the time to get my head around it...
Pah
sunsetdb7, exactly I've tried at least 3 times . I still have it in my bookcase awaiting my 4th attempt. I will crack it eventually.
Mikael
One of his greatest works, soon to be a tv series on Netflix

sunsetdb7, reading Tolkien is like swimming in a shallow stream: there's lots of water, but not enough to fully immerse yourself in. So just splash around in it, enjoy the flow, and don't pretend its a Jacuzzi.
