In Greek mythology, who were a tribe of women warriors related to Scythians and Sarmatians?
Correct answer: Amazons
Saint Nine
Player SQinfoNUTS, I don't know where or why Wikipedia got a reputation for inaccuracy? Like anything on such a massive scale, there are bound to be some errors, but as far as I know, they were mostly minor biographical inaccuracies. One of the amazing things about Wikipedia is that it's truly democratic: anyone can contribute. That does make it open to abuse, but claims have to backed up with cited sources. Dubious or unfounded information is promptly flagged. Entries are peer reviewed & the process is actually quite rigorous. Why not test it for yourself? Choose a topic you're knowledgeable about and see what it says, and if you do find any errors, correct them! Alternatively, see how quickly bad information is flagged. That's the whole idea and the point of allowing anyone to contribute. I've made some minor contributions myself, restricted to the discussion page of the appropriate article because they were hearsay.
I don't know where those rumors originated, I suspect ulterior motives: Knowledge is a powerful thing & some people would rather keep us ignorant. They can't censor it, so they discredit it. To have the sum of human knowledge at your fingertips, the benefit of all those experts' contributions, all for free without ads is nothing short of phenomenal. Wikipedia is actually one of the web's great assets & one of its most worthwhile.

The Amazon's reputedly cut off one of their breasts so it didn't get in the way of their bow arm.
Player SQinfoNUTS
Montana Lady, remember I did a report on these ladies sometime in school. And indeed the business about the breast it seems to be confirmed by several sources none of which were Wikipedia.
Player maz
thier breast or breasts would have been tightly bound in battles giving rise to the myth of them being cut off. it all adds to the scary warriors rumours. more recently it is called propaganda.
Saint Nine
LaContessa, I was going to mention that. The reason wasn't so much that it got in the way of the bow arm though, it was the bow string. If you think about it that makes more sense. It sounds painful (both the mastectomy and getting your breast hit by a vote string).
Montana Lady
LaContessa, Strabo wrote around of a rumor that Amazon's sear the right breast of their infants for that reason.
Zenou
Player maz, if you speak greek then you know that amazon means without breast

LaContessa, Actually it was the left breast. It was done to a) prevent it being struck by the bowstring and b) as a right of passage into warriorhood.
I can't help thinking that the prevention was worse than the potential injury!

Is the Amazon river in south America name after them.

Many graves have been found with female skeletal remains, and swords, shields, horses, riding equipment and everything a person would need to make thread, or cloth and to cook. I know a few modern woman soldiers would be wonderful Amazon's. Vikings had shield maidens, plenty of evidence for them. National G and Archaeology Today have had many fine articles about the graves of these women.

I read somewhere years ago that they supposably had just one boobie. Dont know if i remembered it right.
