In Paragraph 2 you say it is “so chemically reactive,” then in para 5 you talk about its “low reactivity.” Which is it to be?

While safe for covering food, be sure it's not acidic. Like spaghetti sauce, tomato sauce. The aluminium foil will develop holes and contaminate the food it is covering.

Syr Hal, that's a very good question ,the answer is that it's very reactive. Metallic aluminium exposed to air is that it rapidly forms an oxide layer , that is generally foodsafe .. only strong acids and alkali would attack it. But soft drink cans are lined with plastic, because soft drinks are very acid. aluminium pots ,pans, cups have a limited life due to chemical attack and mechanical erosion ( scratches, dents, cracking)

Did you know planes are made from aluminium because it is the lightest metal and it is strong enough to hold whilst being lifted off the earth at amazing speeds :)

[bobbo16], was it the spelling that threw you off? That's how the British spell it. It is a metallic element.

Syr Hal, Aluminium is very reactive, Aluminium Oxide is very unreactive. Aluminium Oxide is what you get when Aluminium is exposed to air, which forms a layer protecting the metal underneath.

Aluminium is the most abundant metal in the earth's crust. If you count the whole earth it is iron, as the earth's core is an iron ball.

Syr Hal, many elements have different reactivity depending on what state they are in. Metals can be in a metalic state or an ionic state. As a metal they have all their electrons and share the outermost ones back and fourth between each other making a strong but relatively flexible bonds. Aluminum makes a fairly strong and flexible bound that allows it to bend but not break and as a metal those metallic bonds are not easily broken. However, as an ion, aluminum loses its outermost electrons and doesn't make metallic bounds anymore.

How come there's an extra "i" on the last syllable? I'm sure it's spelled "aluminum" on the packaging of most aluminum foils.

Syr Hal, Aluminium metal is very reactive and the dull grey surface is due to Aluminium Oxide layer. Later Aluminium foil is being discussed, which is said to 'low reactivity'. But this is due to a surface layer added during manufacture.

Player #2867640, it's not the lightest metal (when considering a pour of the pure element .) . it's strong , it's tough ( elastic,up to a point ,and tough means that point takes more energy to get to than most other) and then you can do strength for weight ...and find it's better than steel
