The way this was worded was confusing, it took me a couple times reading it to realize what it meant.

FaithfulReader, I was taught the same thing however I was also taught that if something is used incorrectly often enough and long enough it becomes accepted

Centenarian is right. In general you don’t put the comma before and. However, the last paragraph gave us a perfect example of where it is needed in order to make sense of the listing involved.

As a writer I use punctuation only as it aids clarity. it is the sense intended by the author, not the Gospel according to Strunck.

KookyOrangutan5005, I agree with you. It was hard to figure out that the question was about the Oxford Comma.
Centenarian
The general rule is that you don't put a comma before and

Thanks Stevie.
I regularly use the first example, but have never done the second. You have given me a new idea in sentence structuring.
Brandy
was taught to always put a comma in a list before and. it is never an option.

KookyOrangutan5005, Yes! The question was a mess and would no doubt have gotten a scholar ousted from Oxford. LOL!

How do these questions continue to be worded so confusingly? Does it not have to be thoroughly analyzed first?

I ALWAYS use the Oxford Comma, but I never knew its proper name. My favorite movies are murder mystery, family, and documentaries.

FaithfulReader, I never use the comma before the word "and"in a list. My grade school English teacher taught us not to. However, I do see how it would be useful in an instance such as
the example in the
explanation, a list
which uses and repeatedly.
