Allo4ka5, He had planned a black marble tomb for himself to stand next to the Taj but the cost was beggering the country. His sons deposed him and held him prisoner in the Red Fort from where he could see the Taj Mahal across the river. The poet Tagore called it A marble tear falling across the cheek of time. So true. I have been there and will never forget it.

I have been to the Taj Mahal and yes it is beautiful and the gardens are exquisite. But the walls of the original Taj Mahal, were vandalised and people removed the inset precious stones that were inland into the building external walls. However if you enter the actual tomb, inside the inlaid precious stones can be seen as to what the would have looked like and it is breathtaking. But for my money the place which is more interesting, now a ruin near the Taj is an hour by car is Fatehpur Sikri, make sure you have a guide to explain how amazing this historical city was. It is listed as a Unesco world heritage site.

Blacktulip23, most of Mughal architecture were built on top of plundered or looted temples... and the Taj Mahal is no aberration. It was a temple by the name of Tejo Mahalaya. The ancient scriptures are actually carved on the walls, near to the ceiling in the original structure.

Sardor Rahimiy, Yes absolutely true that Babur was a descendant of Amir Timur, but also of Ghengis Khan. The Timuirids were a dynasty established by Timur rather than an ethnicity. Timur himself was Mongolic-Turkic Barlas. The Barlas were a Turkicized Mongol nomadic group in Central Asia with roots in one of the regiments of the Mongolian army. Yeah you can find all this on Wikipedia, but I actually learned it while living in Uzbekistan , the area was called Transoxiana when Timur was born there. I lived for 3 years in the Farghona valley, in the cities of Andijon and Farghona ( these are the correct spellings in the Latin alphabet of these cities and the valley. Fergana and Andijon are the Russified spellings). Bobur, or Babur, as he is known in Uzbekistan , was born in Andijon. So anyways, the people of India understandably called the invaders the Moghuls coming from the word Mongols. As Timur and his great great great grandson Babur were descended from the Mongols, Babur from Ghengis Khan himself.

Bobur, his children and next generations were not moghuls. Their ancestors were Timurids who were Emir Timur's children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

the Taj Mahal being white...you would be amazed to know that a black Taj Mahal too was to be constructed for Shah Jahan himself but in vain
