Technically it means Vertical Helical Scan, the method by which it records on the tape.

They were easy to use, and kinda 'rugged'.(they WOULD take a bit of abuse). Sure, DVDs DO give a better pic, sound, etc; But it took awhile for Digital recorders & players to be available, affordable, and commonly around. Same as cassettes. For just a quick recording, vid & audio cassettes were great!

Player #4563538, and complicated, my brother was an electrical tech, and used to fix about anything electronic, but he said the beta max were his least favorite, tedious to fix right, and for them to work consistently for any length of time.

Our first VCR I think in late 70s was $1,000.00. Bought at Nelson Bros in Chicago. No one else we knew had one so friends gathered at our home to watch with us!

I wish VCR's were still being made cuz a lot of my favourite movies are on VHS. I'm hoping they'll bring them back like they did with turntables.

I actually still have a DVD/VHS player/recorder (never even been used btw) that I purchased several (15+, maybe?) years ago (along w/a bunch of DVD-R's) in order to digitize my VHS collection. Didn't realize, at the time, I needed an HDMI cable in order for it to work. Honestly, had no clue what one of those were back then & by the time I did finally learn, converting them to DVD felt pretty pointless since everything was starting to be online. 🤷‍♀️

Player Elf Council, Can’t you get them transferred to disc? Might be more expensive than it’s worth though , except for especially cherished ones

Dave Robb, Ours went dread and you can't buy them here in Oz except for second hand and usually without a control. We're stuck with a load of tapes we can't watch.
