He taught himself to read by tricking white kids: "I bet you don't know all the letters." Do they would show him the letters to prove it to him!

Missy K
I most respect he spoke of equality for everyone. He ran for president against Victoria Woodhull, the first time a woman and an African-American were in the running.

IllustratedGrrl
If only people back then had the tolerance and intelligence to make him president. We could use someone like him now, too.

mammy1027
I love history!

DrGirl777
He also travelled to Ireland and worked with Daniel O'Connell, the Irish Liberator. He was a great inspiration to the people of Ireland that were being treated poorly by England during the potato famine. While in Ireland and the UK he said he could do much because he was treated as a human and equal.

SneakyMole92698., you do realize it was REPUBLICANS that fought to free slaves right? The Republican party historically has vied for more freedom for the citizens and less government control. Democrats lean toward more government control and keeping citizens dependent upon its government for survival. Brush up on some REAL history my friend.

In NYC, 8th Avenue, which runs north/south on the west side of Manhattan island, has 3 names!
Downtown, it's 8th Avenue. Farther north, it's Central Park West. When it enters Harlem at 110th street, it's called Frederick Douglass Blvd.

DrGirl777, I find it extremely sad AND infuriating that AMERICAN Black people, were treated so much BETTER in Europe. Josephine Baker, and countless others. No one except Miz. Baker, comes to mind.
And Thank You. I am ashamed to admit that I was unaware of
Frederick Douglass' history with the Irish people.
