A lot of varieties are decreased in production because, after a while (years or decades), they lose the characteristics that made them popular. The red delicious is a prime example. It has become mealy and has lost so much flavor that you can hardly find it now. Not all varieties do this, or at least they take longer.

The Golden Delicious still has some of its flavor. However, the Red Delicious has very little flavor and is my least favorite apple. Honey Crisp Apples are nice and juicy.
