RandalD, your experiment does not work. If he fired electrons at a nucleus they would be absorbed in a process called beta absorption (weak nuclear interaction).
If, however, he fired protons or alpha particles (helium nuclei, which he used), these being positively charged would be deflected, positive-positive, by the nucleus.
You have the right idea, but not electrons.
