Correct answer: Butterfly

I find it a very difficult stroke!

This method of swimming has to be the least effective. That is, in terms of energy & effort expended. It just looks like a clumsy way of swimming.

Geordie4Life, freestyle is the front crawl. Freestyle is one stroke, not all strokes. You are correct that freestyle is the fastest stroke however. I swam, taught and coached swimming for many years so I know exactly what I’m talking about. If you’re American that’s how it is for us. When you swim the individual medley, you swim butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke, and then freestyle last. It’s always in this order unless you’re in a relay with 4 swimmers competing. Then the order is backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly, freestyle.

I was a competitive swimmer from a young age, swimming up through college. Butterfly was my best event. I had such strong muscles in my arms and back, I could hardly fit into most dresses because I was too broad in the shoulders. It’s the most beautiful stroke in my opinion and definitely the hardest for beginners. You absolutely need to start practicing butterfly at a young age to be able to do it well as an adult. I taught and coached swimming for many years and this is an incredibly true statement. You can’t get to a great competing level unless you started young. I used to go to Stanford swim camp in the summers to train with various olympians when I was younger. I could swim butterfly as good as I could freestyle for long distances, or any other stroke. It’s not called “front crawl” either, it’s freestyle. I used to love the I.M.’s (individual medley) because I was really good at every stroke. I miss competitive swimming so much. I’m in my 40’s now but swimming was some of the best times of my life. Today I’m so out of shape I can hardly get my arms out of the water to do butterfly anymore but man was I good when I was younger.

Cha Cha, front crawl is not freestyle. Freestyle means you can swim any stroke. As front crawl is the fastest stroke then competitive swimmers will always choose to swim front crawl.

Maximino
Oh no because butterfly can't swim so they exclude that....

Deborah
My son was a competitive swimmer and the butterfly was his best stroke.

MC Merci
Peggy, front crawl is the regular way of swimming.

Player #5684840
Peggy, freestyle

Player #978627
Well that is odd, because I can do the butterfly no problem but struggle with all the others.
