Otto was our GSD. Smartest dog EVER. Went on a walk with my 2 yr old in stroller, my 4 yr old holding my hand, Otto off leash leading the way. A dog rushed us barking. Otto never growled or barked. He put himself between us and the charging dog and literally stared him down.

As a trainer of Guide Dogs, the German shepherd is an outstanding breed. Highly intelligent, loyal, protective and adaptable to change.

Best dog I was ever owned by. He was about 6 weeks old when we meet. I lost him to cancer from rabies medicine before he was 6 years old. my heart still hurts.

#1DallasCowboysfan4 , I feel you lost my little childhood friend way too early to a shell tick in his ear of all things I still can hear his painful yelping it was a painful way to go poor laddie. I miss him terribly from time to time, it was nearing 45 yrs now, gone but always loved.

jakeandlinconsmom, My siblings & I grew up with German Shepards. Alas, I'm the only one of us who didn't have my own as an adult. (Apartment dweller.) Bestest doggos on the planet! Although I admit to being in love with all animals.

Player Elf Counsel, Yes we called them Alsatians but most people knew that their proper name was German Shepherd. Theyve been officially called the GSD again in the UK since 1977.

BionicGoon98467, that reminded me of the time our Doberman, Max put himself side on between two GSDs who were aiming for our little old Heeler terrier who was deaf and didn’t see them coming. Max was a big dog and they careered off him. I love GSDs too. These were just not under control and badly trained. It’s always the owner to blame!

Player Elf Counsel, I was lead to believe the Alsatian is slightly different to the German Shepard, the latter has longer fur . I’ve had both some years ago and they are the most beautiful and loyal dogs . I miss them so much since they passed away 😢

* Seshati *, surely a vet could have removed this- even those many years ago?

Grumpy Fossil, yes the breed temporarily had their name changed new name derived from the French area of Alsace during war time anti German sentiment. Great dogs either way lol who cares about names but I have met a few meanies in my time just like some other dogs & their pretty darn scary to say the least but when loving oh my so cuddly & such good friends.

OptimisticFrog17914, this is exactly what happened to ours at age 7. 😢😢😢. Wonderful dog

JezzerLX, In England we always called them Alsatians. I'd never heard of a German Shepherd until moving to Australia. I was told it was because of the war. No one would have a dog which was German. Weird.
