Alice was based on a little girl Carroll was obsessed with - a family friend. The documentary I watched stated that at one point her parents became incredibly worried and banned him from going near her and her two sisters. It was really weird.

my guess is acid as mushrooms don't give as intense hallucinations. I believe Alice was on her own psychedelic journey because going down the rabbit hole and follow the white rabbit are slangs for taking hallucinogens
